Da Nang woman sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for illegally housing a South Korean man without a passport or visa. Dang Thuy Diem, 41, was found guilty of "mediating an illegal stay in Vietnam," Da Nang People's Court said on Monday.
A 52-year-old South Korean man named Woo Jae-yeol flew to Da Nang as part of the visa waiver program and was allowed to stay until September 15, 2019.
But after the visa-free period expired, he did not want to return to South Korea and therefore looked for a way to stay illegally in Vietnam.
After several other landlords refused to let him in because he did not have a passport and visa, Dim agreed to do so in March 2020. Wu told her that he had lost his passport and used his photo on his phone to apply for jobs and places to stay.
Diem did not tell the authorities that she had rented her house to a foreigner, as required by law.
The police learned about her violation in June 2021.
