The northern province of Tuyen Quang wants its proposal to build an airport next to a tourist site included in the national aviation development scheme. Nahang Airport will be built in two phases through a public-private partnership to boost Tuyen Quang's economic and tourism development, the provincial government's proposal to the transport ministry said.
The 350-hectare airport will be located close to Nahang Lambinh Nature Reserve, which is a Special National Tourism Site.
Nestled in a remote forest along the banks of the Gam and Nang rivers, the reserve is home to magnificent caves and a diverse ecosystem with many species of endangered flora and fauna, including the Tokin snub-nosed monkey.
Several provinces have recently requested permission to build airports to stimulate economic growth, including the northern provinces of Son La and Ninh Binh, the central province of Ha Tinh, and the southern province of Ba Ria Vung Tau.
There are currently 22 civil airports in the country, including 10 international air hubs, the two largest of which are Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City and Noi Bai in Hanoi.
